Audit and Upgrade Your Home for Energy Efficiency

November 5, 2017

How to stop heating the outdoors this winter was the point of Scott Fischer’s presentation at the H/AREA members meeting on October 24, 2017 at the Morris County library.  Scott, co-founder of Ciel Power, explained that a whole house energy audit, like an annual physical exam except for houses, finds out where winter cold intrudes and heat escapes from your home; the same culprits switch roles in the summer.  The audit also checks for safe operation of your heating equipment: no blocked flow or escaping gasses.  The cost of a 3-hr audit by Ciel is $99 for the remainder of 2017 with a further reduced price $49 for partnership municipalities which include Morristown.

The audit data are analyzed by Ciel using software to determine energy saving opportunities.  A company representative then goes over the results which may include high efficiency heating and cooling equipment when warranted and upgraded wall and attic insulation to keep that comfortable environment inside your house.  The presentation can viewed on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KOByxyC6HM&feature=youtu.be

The New Jersey Clean Energy Program offers 50% cash rebates up to $5000 for certain energy saving projects when the projected savings exceeds 25%.  Details are at http://njcleanenergy.com/RESI .

Since its founding in 2010, Ciel (sky in French) has partnered with eight NJ municipalities, staring with Highland Park and most recently Morristown, to improve the energy performance of homes in the community.  Ciel has won several environmental and business awards, including the first NJ Business Incubator Award in 2013.

Scott explains how regions for air infiltration are located by lowering pressure inside the house.  Pressure is reduced by an exhaust fan sealed by a plastic sheet in an exterior doorway.

Ciel is one of nine local companies that have performed more than 200 audits in NJ since 2010.  The NJ program is part of the national Home Performance with Energy Star program sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the EPA https://www.energystar.gov/campaign/improvements.
